business model
AbbVie is a research-based biopharmaceutical company that develops, manufactures, and sells branded prescription drugs and some aesthetic products. Revenue comes primarily from patent-protected therapies sold to wholesalers, specialty pharmacies, and providers, with pricing supported by insurers and government payers.
revenue segments
Key franchises include immunology (Skyrizi and Rinvoq, now the growth drivers as Humira faces biosimilar competition), oncology (Imbruvica, Venclexta), neuroscience (Vraylar, Botox Therapeutic, migraine drugs), aesthetics (Botox Cosmetic, Juvederm from the Allergan acquisition), and eye care. The US is the largest market, with meaningful international sales across Europe and other regions.
key dependencies
Dependent on patent exclusivity, a productive R&D and clinical pipeline, and FDA/EMA regulatory approvals. It relies on contract and internal manufacturing, specialty distribution, and reimbursement from commercial and government payers; US drug-pricing policy (including Medicare negotiation under the IRA) is a major macro dependency.
competitors
Competes with other large pharma and biotech firms including Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Merck, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Amgen, Novartis, Roche, and Eli Lilly, as well as biosimilar makers of Humira.
moat
Moat stems from patents, regulatory barriers, clinical trial data, established brands, and scale in specialty distribution and sales. The successful transition from Humira to Skyrizi and Rinvoq demonstrates franchise durability, though moats erode as patents expire.
risks
Main risks are the Humira biosimilar erosion, patent cliffs on other products, pipeline/clinical trial failures, drug-pricing reform and payer pressure, litigation, and high acquisition-related debt and goodwill from the Allergan deal.
